Milev kommt aus der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik, einem Land, dass es heute nicht mehr gibt, aufgewachsen eben dort und in der Volksrepublik Bulgarien. Sie wurde in der DDR eingeschult und immatrikuliert, beendete ihr Studium in der BRD, wanderte nach Japan aus, kehrte wieder zurück, studierte noch einmal in Österreich und emigrierte in die Schweiz. PD Dr. phil. habil. Yana Milev, geboren in Leipzig, ist habilitierte Kultursoziologin, promovierte Kulturphilosophin sowie Ethnografin und Kuratorin. Nach Studium der Kunst und künstlerischer Karriere (Künstlerin der Documenta 10) geht sie für ethnografische Studien nach Japan und erlernt dort die traditionellen Japanischen Kampfkünste (Kyudō, Aikidō). Im Anschluss daran 4-jähriges Doktoratsstudium für Philosophie an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Wien mit Vertiefung Anthropologie der Kunst sowie Kultur- und Medientheorie. 2008 promovierte sie zu den Themen des Krieges und des Ausnahmezustands im 21. Jahrhundert. Eine redigierte Fassung ihrer Promotionsschrift wird 2009 als ihre erste wissenschaftliche Monografie vom Verlag Springer Wien New York veröffentlicht. 2009 wird Milev assoziierte Forscherin am Seminar für Soziologie (SfS) der Universität St. Gallen (HSG). 2010 bis 2012 war sie Visiting Research Fellow am Forschungsinstitut der HfG Karlsruhe und wurde 2012 als ordentliche Habilitandin der HSG bestätigt. Von 2013 bis 2019 war sie Projektleiterin am ICS der ZHdK Zürich. Sie realisierte kuratorische Projekte an der ZHdK Zürich, am ZKM Karlsruhe, am HKW Berlin, im Bureau Europa Maastricht. Zwischen 2000 und 2015 war sie durchgehend als Hochschuldozentin mit Lehraufträgen u.a. an der KHS Berlin-Weißensee (2000-2002), der ZHdK Zürich (2004-2009), der HfG Karlsruhe (2002-2012), der HSG (2011-2015) tätig. 2014 erfolgt ihre Habilitation zu Themen der Visuellen Soziologie und der Designsoziologie sowie ihre Ernennung zur Privatdozentin für Kultursoziologie der Universität St. Gallen (HSG). 2017 gründet Milev die unabhängige Plattform AGIO | Gesellschaftsanalyse + Politische Bildung. Sie ist Initiatorin und Leiterin des Forschungsprojekts „Entkoppelte Gesellschaft - Ostdeutschland seit 1989/90. Ein soziologisches Laboratorium“ das auf mehrere Bände angelegt ist, die von Peter Lang Internationaler Wissenschaftsverlag Bern und Berlin publiziert werden. Milev ist in der Schweiz niedergelassen und arbeitet in St. Gallen.

PD Dr. phil. habil. Yana Milev, born in Leipzig, is a habilitated cultural sociologist, a graduated philosophical doctor (PhD), as well as an ethnographer and curator. After studying art and a artistic career (artist at Documenta 10), she went to Japan for ethnographic studies, where she learned the traditional Japanese martial arts (Kyudō, Aikidō). This was followed by a 4-year doctoral study in philosophy at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, specializing in the anthropology of art as well as cultural and media theory. In 2008 she completed her doctorate on the subject of war and the state of emergency in the 21st century (Emergency Empire). An edited version of her doctoral thesis will be published in 2009 as her first academic monograph by Verlag Springer Wien New York. In 2009 Milev became an associated researcher at the Department of Sociology (SfS) at the University of St. Gallen (HSG). From 2010 to 2012 she was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Research Institute of the HfG Karlsruhe and was confirmed as a regular habilitation candidate at the HSG in 2012. From 2013 to 2019 she was project manager at the ICS of the ZHdK Zurich. In 2014, she completed her postdoctoral treatise and was appointed as a qualified university lecturer in Sociology of Culture with degree from the University of St. Gallen (HSG). Her habilitation takes place on topics of visual and media sociology and design politics. She realized leading curatorial projects at the ZHdK Zurich, at the ZKM Karlsruhe, at the HKW Berlin, in the Bureau Europa Maastricht. Between 2000 and 2015 she worked continuously as a university lecturer with teaching assignments at the KHS Berlin-Weißensee (2000-2002), the ZHdK Zurich (2004-2009), the HfG Karlsruhe (2002-2012), the HSG (2011-2015).  In 2017, Milev founded the independent platform AGIO | Social analysis + political education. She is the initiator and head of the research project “Decoupled Society - East Germany since 1989/90. A sociological laboratory “which is laid out in several volumes published by Peter Lang International Scientific Publisher Bern and Berlin. Milev is based in Switzerland and works in St. Gall.
